1,4-Butanediol is a colorless viscous liquid-like liquid, which can react with strong oxidizing agents. It is an important basic organic chemical material, mainly used in the production of poly(dibutyl terephthalate) (PBT), polyurethane, γ-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofuran.

1,4-Butanediol is used in a wide range of applications. More than half of it is used in the United States and Western Europe for the production of tetrahydrofuran, followed by γ-butyrolactone and polybutylene terephthalate, the latter being a rapidly developing engineering plastic; 1,4-butanediol is used as a chain extender and polyester raw material for the production of polyurethane elastomers and flexible polyurethane foam; the esters made from 1,4-butanediol are good plasticizers for cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylates and polyesters. 1,4-Butanediol has good hygroscopic flexibility and can be used as gelatin softener and absorbent, treatment agent for cellophane and other unused paper. It is also used to prepare N-methylpyrrolidone, N-vinylpyrrolidone and other pyrrolidone derivatives, as well as vitamin B6, pesticides, herbicides and solvents for a variety of processes, plasticizers, lubricants, humidifiers, softeners, adhesives and brightening agents for the electroplating industry.
